The CRAVE Academy

Jordan Johnson is a champion for students living with developmental disabilities. That’s why she founded The CRAVE Academy in October 2023. The mobile school delivers customized life skills and job readiness programs tailored specifically for high schoolers learning with developmental disabilities. Her mission is to facilitate a seamless transition to independence for her students, equipping them with the tools and confidence needed to thrive.

In early 2024, she led eight comprehensive life skills programs at the Michigan School for the Deaf, Lake Fenton High School, and Carman-Ainsworth High School – and has since expanded the offering to eight Genesee County schools. The programs cover concepts including boundaries and healthy communication, self-advocacy, financial literacy, and college preparedness. Through collaborations with organizations like Financial Plus Credit Union and Mott Community College, students gain exposure to real-world careers and career options. One of her students recently transitioned to community college to pursue studies in automotive technology, marking a significant milestone in her journey toward self-sufficiency.

Johnson is now expanding The CRAVE Academy’s offerings with a three-week paid, work-based learning experience with the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library, as well as a two-day college prep program in partnership with Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint. She is working to offer an end-of-the-school-year job fair, where students can apply for summer employment, and more social events where students can practice their social development and build their own sense of community.

In addition, Johnson serves on the library’s board of directors. She is also community engagement coordinator for the Ballenger Park Coalition and youth mental health specialist for the Genesee County Prevention Coalition.
